Avoiding Dental School Jail

You’re just about to finish prepping that #30-DO back during your dental school days….this ever happen to you?

What about selective caries removal?

Before we dive into the literature of caries excavation, here’s a poll for the people:

Our answer?…we were definitely not allowed to perform selective caries removal…especially not on a practical.

But that’s why this good-looking guy is stepping in…

Yup, that’s the ADA and they are having a discussion about the old-school ways of caries excavation…

Brown dentin…not necessarily a reason to remove…because new guidelines from the ADA are preaching this:

And when we talk about selective caries removal the ADA means…

Because the researchers that put all this together promote restorative dentistry’s 2 main goals:

• 👉Preserve healthy tooth structure

• 👉Protect the pulp-dentin complex

And selective caries removal often achieves both of those aims.

But here’s a quick disclaimer about this research:

So not perfect, but still a good assumption in our eyes.

And of course like always, more research needs to be done…especially considering that some researchers estimate that 50% of all 1 to 3 surface restorations are performed on non-cavitated lesions…FIFTY!

But that’s a topic for another email
